Maybe it was just me, but growing up halfway between Philadelphia and Trenton, I was exposed to an intense rivalry between these two states. Or perhaps it was due to my mother being from North Jersey and my father from being just outside of Philadelphia. The sports debates at family events often got quite heated.

Despite the rivalry that may exist among its citizens, there is a longstanding reciprocal tax agreement between these two states.

That means if you are a New Jersey resident your employer should withhold NJ tax, even if you work in Pensylvania.

That means if you are a PA resident your employer should withhold PA tax, even if you work in NJ.

Check your W-2 Box 15, it should match where you live, not necessarily where you work. If they are not the same, you may be entitled to a refund from the other state.

I am offering a free assessment of your 2015 & 2016 tax returns to ensure that your taxes were filed properly and you get the money you deserve. I don’t know about you but getting money back from a rival state certainly gets me excited!
